The winning photo in the Kvinna till Kvinna contest taken by Heba Al-Agez

The winner of the Kvinna till Kvinna photo contest is elected

2010-05-05

The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation photo contest is closed. The winner is elected out of the more than 60 photographs on the subject “Women working for peace” that we received from our partner organisations.

We received around 3 000 votes – a considerable commitment that signals that these pictures depict a reality that seldom is shown in the media. Many of the voters have commented that it brings them joy and a sense of hope to see these strong active women in peace processes.

First
The winner is a photo from Palestine, showing a girl in the Jericho valley during a workshop to train young Palestinians to express their surroundings and society.

Photographer: Heba Al-Agez. Organisation: Palestinian Working Women Society for Development, Palestine. The organisation will receive the award of 1000 Euro.

– As a Palestinian young woman, I believe that by this photo, I managed to introduce the work for a big issue. I started taking photos as a hobby and discovered that by these photos, I can transfer a message to the world, Heba el-Agez says when knowing that her photo won the contest.

A few comments from the voters:
This photo touches my heart.

First of all this is an incredibly beautiful picture over a barren landscape which has been subject for dispute for as long as this little girl can remember. The colours show hope and the girl can make a lot of difference if she is aware of her possibilities!

This photo makes people think of war and peace. Hope and hopelessness is at a delicate verge. We must feel responsible for our actions.

Second
The second most popular photo comes from Israel and shows ”the Raging Grannies” (Chava Keller and Aliyah Strauss) performing political satire at a demonstration in front of the Tel Aviv police station.

Photographer: Raya Knopov. Organisation: Coalition of Women for Peace, Israel.

A few comments from the voters:
Many marvellous pictures. I still choose the photo of Raya Knopov of the Raging Grannies. With the joy that these women shape their parts, they at the same time are pointing fingers at the militarised and humourless official Israel, here represented by the young and slightly nervous policemen.

WOW! Brings me hope to still fight for women rights!

The courage of these grannies is extraordinary. They are truly feminists and peace-activists of the world.

Third
Also this photo shows an elderly woman with many years in the women’s and peace movement but still going strong. Fika Filipovic from Women in Black, Belgrade, Sarajevo, is 80 years old and still active.

Photographer: Biliana Rakocevich. Organisation: Women in Black, Serbia.

A few comments from the voters:
I feel the power of this brave woman that radiates from the picture.

I love this picture. It symbolizes the solidarity with all people who are  determined to not only live the reality where everyone is valued as a person,  but it represents that we can all give our contribution to keep this  global community of tolerant and loving humans growing and advancing.

A light, a hope, in darkness.
